Our skin is our body’s largest organ. It is our first line of defense, the first barrier to fight illness and a passageway to our bloodstream. It works so well that we often neglect it: we either don’t treat our skin as it should be treated or we don’t understand it’s signs.
Your skin is a barometer for your body’s health. Check out what its simple daily signs are trying to tell you:
Tired Texture: If you are experiencing dryness, inflammation and also morning-after puffy eyes, those are the result of hormones released by bad sleep or sleep deprivation. A study from the University Hospitals of Cleveland found out that those who sleep less than 5 hours a day have more lines and dark spots than those who wake up well rested.
If you did not have a good night of sleep, there are still a couple of things that you can do to better your skin: depuffing eye creams, hydrating serums and vitamin C.
Breakouts: Stress, anxiety and poor sleeping patterns cause an increase of the skin oil production and compromise a thin “film” (acid mantle) that protects your skin against bacteria causing the breakouts.
Now, most of us would use a cleanser to try to stop the breakout, right?! The worst thing you can do is using an alkaline type though: it would erodes the acid mantle and stimulate your oil glands. The best choice are those made of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acids.
Deeper lines: there are many reason for deep lines but some of them are caused by ourselves: High brightness on computers and mobile devices, as well as copy machines and microwaves, emit low-levels of UV rays. These rays break down the collagen of the skin over the time:
Just turn down the brightness on your devices and use a glare-reducing protector. Also use Vitamin A creams to increase the collagen production.
Skin sensitivity: inflammation, increased sensitivity and dehydration are linked to the hormone cortisol. The more stressed you are, the more the production of cortisol will increase.
I know that it is not always easy to relax and don’t stress, for those days you can use a BB or CC cream to hydrate and make your skin glow.
Skin Fixes:
Red-Light LED: This device gives skin a nice dose of infrared light, which leads the body to produce extra collagen and elastin (they work together to create skin strength, firmness, and shape).
Lowering stress levels is the best therapy:
- Having an exercise routine helps a lot: Jogging, walking, riding a bike for at least 30 minutes will help you to keep your mind out of the daily stress.
- Meditation and Yoga helps your mind to be clearer and to experience tranquillity.
