Jean Paul Gaultier (62) bowed out of ready-to-wear after nearly 40 years of a great career. The “enfant terrible” of fashion – famous for provocative collections and outrageous outfits for the queen of Pop, Madonna – explained that his decision came as prêt-à-porter “evolved considerably”.

However, it is not the end of his fashion journey as he will continue to dedicate himself to haute couture and stage costumes for performers such as Kylie Minogue:

“We looked at various possibilities considering the present state of the company and we have reached the same conclusion. For some time, I have found true fulfilment in working on the haute couture, and it allows me to express my creativity and my taste for research and experimentation.

Commercial constraints as well as the frenetic pace of collections don’t leave any freedom, nor the necessary time to find fresh ideas and to innovate. I will be able again to express my creativity without constraints.”

Jean Paul Gautier lauched his company in 1976 and moved into haute couture in 1997 – his collections are ALWAYS a highlight at the Paris fashion week. He is considered one of France’s most talented fashion  designer and has since 2011 an exhibition around the world that is due to arrive in Paris in 2015.
